Choosing a Remodeling Contractor

Choosing a home remodeling contractor is not as simple as picking the lowest priced bid for the job. There are many factors and steps involved. In most cases comparing estimates side by side it's hard to figure out what you're getting. Quality of work, what's included in the contract and what isn't can vary substantially from contractor to contractor.

As a homeowner you should consider:

  • What kind of attention to detail does the contractor exhibit in his work?
  • Will he cut corners in areas that may affect the integrity of the job, and not just make it less expensive?
  • What quality of materials are to be used? Do they meet your local building codes, and will they stand the test of time?
  • How well does he deal with changes that may occur as the job progresses?
  • Will he charge excessive rates for changes?
  • Will he accommodate your household needs during the construction process, i.e. Keeping things neat and livable for your family?
  • Will he follow up on your needs and concerns after the job is completed?
  • Can you trust the subcontractors that may be brought in if necessary for your job?
  • Is the estimator the one who will be doing the work?

    OUR RECOMMENDATION:

First find a contractor that you are comfortable with and that you feel can satisfy the above concerns. Remember, this person will be in your house for quite a while and it will make things a lot smoother if everyone gets along. Second, find a contractor that can negotiate a project that is within your budget and give experienced input if things are going over budget.
